The overvoltage suppressor is provided with a gas-filled housing in which there are electrodes (6, 7) which are opposite one another, spaced apart, in a tubular insulating body (4) and of which at least one is provided on its surface facing the other electrode with a small metal plate (1) which produces a direct electrical connection to the opposite electrode if the overvoltage suppressor is overloaded. In the case of the overvoltage suppressor, the heat dissipation from the electrodes (6, 7) is intended to be controllable such that the AC loads and surge-current loads can be carried without changing the response behaviour, and the short-circuiting mechanism is also initiated in the event of a long-lasting low AC load. To this end, the invention provides that the small metal plate (1) is constructed as a compact disc on whose active surface a layer (2) consisting of a substance having a high thermal electron emission capability is applied and is anchored in depressions (3) in the surface. The overvoltage suppressor is particularly suitable for protecting telecommunications lines. <IMAGE>
