The appts. is used for underground mining of coal, the cutting action being performed by a drum. The appts. moves sideways with removal of coal from the seam (3) and stowing of waste (14) to the rear. A floor plate or sole plate (8) supports props (6) holding beams (10) supporting the roof (1). One cutting drum or several drums may be used; they perform a reciprocating action to strip coal from the face and load it onto a conveyor belt. There is a shielding device behind the cutter drum, with rubs on its outside.
