The overcurrent protection circuit has a disconnectable semiconductor device in series with a soothing capacitor (Cd). The disconnectable of a diode (D) in parallel with a transistor (T). When the inverter changes over, neither fuses nor quick-action cutouts are triggered and the smoothing capacitor is not subjected to a current surge. The semiconductor device carries only the capacitor's current and not the load current. The circuit may also be used with an ac-ac converter having an intermediate d.c. circuit.
