A process for extinguishing materials on fire, and/or for preventing materials or objects from catching fire, involves covering the surface of a solid material with an incombustible, fibrous, granulated or powdered substance, partic. a granulated mineral wool. This substance adheres to the surface of the object on fire by means of a heat resistant sticky substance. The granulated mineral matter can be projected farther than e.g. H2O or a heavy foam. The mineral wool can be stored indefinitely, and when usef forms a thermally insulating layer which limits the heat radiation. The heat resistant sticky substance is partic. a glue of the sodium silicate type, e.g. a soluble glass. It is pref. fed, in liq. form, to a jet of air carrying along the incombustible substance. 4 1 soln. of soluble glass can be used for 100 kg granulated mineral wool.
|
