<p>A method and apparatus for compressing data messages (36) relating to merchandise transaction and generated by a data terminal device (20). The data messages (36) are compressed into data records (46) which are stored in a storage device (32). A counter (58) controls the operation of a sequencing device (60) which controls the production of timing control signals (TC) effective to delete known redundant data in the input message (36) and to provide a start-of-record character (SOTA, SOTB) dependent on the information content of a predetermined non-redundant character (QUAL CODE) in the input message (36), and determining the start of the compressed data record (46). Other non-redundant data which can be determined from the corresponding data in a previous message are also deleted. </p> |
