PURPOSE:To obtain the title compound useful as a raw material for the synthesis of fine chemicals in high yield at low cost, by autoxidizing a polycyclic aromatic in the liquid phase in the presence of specific amounts of a soluble Co salt, a lower saturated fatty acid and/or its anhydride, and a soluble bromine compound under specific conditions. CONSTITUTION:One mole of a polycyclic aromatic compound, e.g. monomethylnaphthalene, having one or more methyl groups directly bonded to the benzene nucleus free from substituents, e.g. hydroxyl or amino groups to inhibit the liquid- phase autoxidation, and easily oxidizable substituents, e.g. aldehyde groups, is autoxidized in the presence of a soluble bromine compound and 1.0 mole or more of a lower saturated fatty acid and/or its anhydride, e.g. acetic acid, and 0.005 mole or more of a soluble Co salt as a catalyst at 30-120 deg.C. At a conversion of 85% or less based on the raw material, the reaction is stopped to give the title compound. |
