The steel projectile is accelerated to a specified velocity by an electromagnetic drive which does not generate noise or heat. The steel projectile is accelerated in stages using an electronic switching circuit. The accelerating force imparted depends only on the supplied energy voltage and current relationships and the number of acceleration stages used. The projectile G on its starting position interrupts the photoelectric barrier P1 which in turn energises the electromagnetic generator L1 so that the projectile is accelerated. The projectile subsequently interrupts another photoelectric barrier P2 for switching the second stage electromagnet L2. A number of such stages can be connected in series.
