The drive system is for an axial piston unit to convert reciprocating motion into rotation or vice versa. It comprises a cylindrical housing (11) with upper (12) and lower (13) portion, containing a number of cylinders (17) with pistons equi-spaced around and parallel to the shaft (16). Each piston is pivotably connected to a conrod carrier (27) via a conrod. The carriers (27) engage a spherical part (15) centrally and rotatably carried in the upper housing (12) in bearing segments (30) extending radially into the interior of the housing. This part is connected to the shaft (16) which extends (31) through the part and is carried in bearings (32).
