The prop-supported cap of the shield used in mine support systems is hinged to a fracture shield, with an interposed hydraulic setting cylinder, or more than one. The cylinder (19) is hinged to one or more fish-plates (20), in the vicinity of the front end on the piston-rod side. The fishplate is fitted with a bolt guideway (26) for guidance of the hinge point (24) for the piston-rod attachment hinge joint. This can be in the form of an elongated slot, while a double fishplate may be used. This permits close fitting of the cylinder below the hinge joint, with a small-thrust cylinder providing for high loading on the fracture shield.
