The diagnostic apparatus is particularly for early detection of cancer cells in the womb. It comprises a balloon tube (2) filling the lumen of the womb, and an insertion portion (1) by which the tube is vaginally inserted through the neck of the womb. This portion can be connected to a catheter (3) to apply mechanical force and/or pneumatic of hydraulic pressure, and the catheter can be moved axially in the insertion portion. The catheter can protrude inside the tube and be joined to it by an airtight seal.
