The periphery of the slitting wheel has a circular row of teeth, each of which carries a curved cutting segment of bonded diamond abrasive. Wheel is used at a desired speed (n) in r.p.m.; a desired depth of cut (x); and a desired longitudinal feed (a) in mu m/minute. The total peripheral area of segments is calculated; and the optimum average number (z) of diamond tips along the wheel periphery per mm of width is derived from: z = a/ az.n. Where az is a predetermined parameter defining the optimum average specific depth of cut in mu m for a single diamond tip during n rotations; and value (az) is 2.5-3.5, es. 2.5-2.6 for cutting granite with high quartz content, 2.8-3.5 for cutting granite of low quartz content. A deep cut can be made in a single pass, esp. when cutting very hard stone, to obtain a finished prod. requiring no smoothing operations on the cut surface.
|
