A method for manufacturing a plastics or ceramic dumped packing e.g. for use in a heat exchanger, for separating solids and liquids from gases or for carrying out chemical reactions with or without a catalyst comprises injection moulding a blank having projections 4 on at least one side, removing the blank from the mould and forming the blank into a cylinder or polygon e.g. Figure 8 with the edges 2 being joined by welding or by releasable fasteners 6. The blank may be provided either with projections 4, 5 on both sides, the projections being in the form of fins, spikes, needles or cones or with projections 4 on one side and a plain surface on the other side. The blank may also be provided with projections 16 and grooves 15 along at least one longitudinal edge. The packing may be formed of polypropylene, porcelain or stoneware. <IMAGE> |
