In a safety steering wheel assembly for a motor vehicle, a sheet metal deformation member 2a of truncated conical shape and circular cross-section is secured at its smaller diameter end to either the steering wheel shaft 4 or steering column support tube 5 and is formed with an outwardly directed step r adjacent its larger diameter end which is attached to a non- collapsible member 2b secured to the steering wheel. As shown, the non-collapsible member 2b defines a cavity into which the member 2a collapses on deformation. This cavity is of substantially the same axial length as the deformation member, and it may be partly filled with padding. The member 2a is riveted to a hub 3 which in turn is fastened to the support tube 5. Alternatively, the steering wheel hub may be connected directed to the shaft 5 so that the steering wheel is rotatable relative to the members 2a and 2b. |
