The preparation of novel tetrahydrobenz[g]isoquinolines of the formula I and their acid addition salts is described. The compounds of the formula I are obtained by introducing the radical R2 into the corresponding tetrahydrobenz[g]isoquinolines which are unsubstituted in the 2-position and wherein R2 denotes alkyl having 1-4 carbon atoms, alkenyl or alkynyl having 3-6 carbon atoms, whose multiple bond is not adjacent to the nitrogen atom of the tricyclic ring skeleton, hydroxyalkyl having 2-5 carbon atoms, whose hydroxyl group is separated from the nitrogen atom by at least two carbon atoms, alkylcarbonylalkyl having 3-5 carbon atoms or phenylalkyl having 7-10 carbon atoms, whose phenyl ring is optionally monosubstituted by halogen having an atomic number of 9-35, alkyl having 1-4 carbon atoms or alkoxy having 1-4 carbon atoms, and R1, R3 and R4 have the same meaning as that given in the Patent Claim. The compounds of the formula I possess anti-aggressive and central-depressant properties. <IMAGE>
