In order to increase the supply of oxygen to the smoking material, which oxygen is always needed directly on the mouth side of the zone currently burning, that is to say at a point which moves continuously during the burning process, the paper has points (A) of increased burning speed which, during burning, lead to a notching (B) of the burning edge. The additional O2-containing air can pass through these notches into the smoking article and mixes with the gas mixture which has just passed the combustion zone (C). The increased burning speed is achieved by local reduction of the thickness of the paper and can be supplemented by local chemical combustion promotion by means of substances such as, for example, potassium chlorate. The advantage of the said paper lies in a reduction of the content of toxic CO, and also of nicotine and tar in the smoke. <IMAGE>
