In this method, the number of procedural steps is intended to be reduced and the need eliminated for the removal of the plastic film at the point where a metal connection is intended to be established, which removal is currently necessary prior to the positioning of the ends which are to be welded. The ends which are to be welded are chamfered as normal. The ends which are to be welded are then positioned overlaying one another. Then, due to the effect of ultrasonic energy with a direction of action (A) perpendicular to the welding plane and by pressing (B) both ends, the plastic (3, 4) is forced away from the connection point (6) through ultrasonic welding in such a way that the metal surfaces at the connection point are bared so that they can then be connected, e.g. also by ultrasonic welding, the ultrasonic energy, however, being brought to act in or parallel to the welding plane. The plastic ultrasonic welding has two advantageous secondary effects. The two ends, having been overlaid, are thereby fixed for the subsequent metal ultrasonic welding. Furthermore, sealing of the metal connection point is automatically achieved due to the fusion, resulting from the plastic ultrasonic welding, of the plastic films covering the metal core (5) of the composite material. <IMAGE>
