The present process relates to the preparation of ketones, which can be used as solvents, by reacting a primary and/or secondary mercaptan, which may have been formed by reacting an alkene with a sulphur compound such as hydrogen sulphide, with water in the presence of a supported sulphidic catalyst containing one or more metals of Group VB and VIB of the Periodic Table and/or of manganese and - as a promoter - an element of Group VIII of the Periodic Table. The process is especially suitable for the production of unbranched ketones, which are less conductive to photochemical smog formation than branched ketones, starting from industrial alkene mixtures.
|
