The polypeptide of the formula: L-Tyr-D-X-Gly-L-Phe-2-MeAla-R in which X is alanyl, methionyl or seryl and R is -OH, -NH2 or -NHCnH2n+1 where n is 1,2,3 or 4 or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, exert an analgesic effect in warm-blooded animals when peripherally administered.
