The waste materials, which can be refuse, sewage sludge or cellulose-containing substances, such as paper, board and wood or mixtures thereof, are treated at elevated temperature and pressure in a fluidised bed reactor B with a gaseous mixture of hydrogen chloride and steam at 110 to 250 DEG C. In the process, the waste materials are sterilised and partially hydrolysed. After this treatment, the material is withdrawn from the fluidised bed reactor B in a dry, pulverulent form. The desired composition of the treatment gas is set in the gas phase by controlling the water content and the treatment gas is recycled one or more times under pressure into the fluidised bed reactor B, whereupon the dry material obtained is subjected to further use or treatment. <IMAGE> |
