The tracked vehicle (3) is driven or lowered into the waterway or beach to be monitored. The vehicle is fitted with a reel (8) on which is wound a combined water filled hose and power and control-cable (4) connected to a shore station (5). The latter is equipped with a water overflow (6) and water supply (7). A watertight box is fitted to the vehicle and maintained at a constant air pressure. Fitted within the box is a pressure transmitter responding to the varying height of the fluid column in the hose. The receiver (5) records and/or indicates the transmitter output and relates this to the known water surface level (2). Distance is recorded from the length of hose-cable in use.
