A bread slicing machine is of the type in which drive to a loaf pusher is transmitted via. a friction clutch in which friction plates are spring-loaded axially towards each other. The speed of advance of the pusher plate is a function of the pressure between the plates. The speed can now be controlled by adjusting a mechanical linkage which displayed spring-loading member axially of the clutch shaft. The mechanical linkage pref. comprises a rotary shaft with a fixed radial arm to displace the spring loading member. The shaft can be rotated by a fixed radial fork housing a nut which engages a screwed section of a control rod having an easily accessible hand wheel. Used to adjust the speed of a bread slicing machine. Provides an optimum combination of output and cut surface quality. This is obtd. by adjusting slicing speed to suit fresh or stale bread texture. The control linkage extends outside the cover of the drive assembly so that adjustments can be made by turning an externally accessible hand wheel.
