Dyeing or printing fibrous materials - using a liquor or paste contg. an oxidant to overcome reduction effects

A fibrous material is dyed with a dyeing liquor, or printed with a printing paste, contg. a dyestuff and an oxidant which has an oxidation potential in a 0.05 wt. % aq. soln. of +200 to +300 mV. The oxidant overcomes reduction effects which occur e.g. during steam fixation of reactive, disperse or direct dyestuffs on synthetic or cellulosic material, without damaging the dyestuffs. It is effective in acidic and alkaline media. The use of an aromatic cpd. having linked to the aromatic nucleus, at least one COOH, SO2H, PO3H2, halogen and/or nitro substituent; and alkali metal or ammonium salt of meta-vanadic, iodic or peroxo-disulphuric acid, a soluble salt of tetravalent Ce, or SeO2 as the oxidant; and a polyester or cellulose acetate fibrous material is claimed.
