Inprovement of the purifying capacity of a purification station comprising one or more aerobic or eventually anaerobic stages for treating waste waters containing toxic substances. The purification station is subject to sudden overloads of toxic substances or used waters containing toxic substances. The concentration of toxic substances is progressively increased during the surges and is adjusted so that the biological balance of the waste waters is almost destroyed and that the time interval separating two consecutive surges is such that it allows the recovery of this balance. Further, a process is provided for growing bacteria which may be used in the treatment of waste waters containing toxic substances, and the bacteria obtained thereby.
