The drive motor has two windings on the armature and rotates between two shunt field windings. A number of relays are each connected to give an even increase in stages of 12 volts to the main relay which then feeds the series wound motor. A further relay cuts out the second armature winding for extra load purposes. A manual lever activates a relay which causes the separation between the field windings and the speed control relays to allow the motor to act as a generator and charge the batteries via the diodes and at the same time act as a retarder.
