Upright chilled mould for casting steel slabs or ingots - where each mould wall consists of copper plate fixed on box through which which cooling water flows

The mould is assembled from single walls which each consists of a cooling box through which water flows. One side of box is formed by a plate made of marterial with high thermal conductivity there plates forming the mould walls. AT least one of the boxes can pref. be moved to alter the dimensions of the mould, esp where the two narrow walls of a lab mould can be moved inwards or outwards between two wide walls to alter the width of a cast slab. The mould walls may be formed by a vertical stack of cooling boxes: and/or corner pieces may be located between adjacent sides of the boxes to obtain moulds with a polygonal cross-section. The boxes may be mounted in frames and supported by work cylinders when large slabs or ingots are being cast. The cost of the moulds per tonne of steel cast it reduced, and the quality of the cast steel is improved by using thin Cu plates water cooled on their rear surfaces. The moulds can be used repeatedly.
