A single or mutibladed photographic shutter mechanism is operated against spring pressure and held open for the duration of the exposure by an electromagnetic latch. The shutter blade (2) is operated against the spring (11) to open so that it latches on the end (13) of the electromagnet's (10) armature (12, 15). The electromagnet net is energised to hold the shutter open.
