Phosphorothiate and phenyl-phosphonothioate prepn - from a phosphorochlorothioate and alkali metal salt with quat phosphonium or ammonium salt catalyst

Prepn. of a phosphorothioate of formula (I) or phenylphosphonothioate of formula (II) comprises reacting (III) with R-OM for (I), or with MO-C6H4-S-C6H4-OM for (II). (where M = alkali metal; R1 = 1-4C alkyl; R2 = 1-4C alkoxy or phenyl; R is hexagonal aromatic heterocyclic or carbocyclic ring, carrying up to 3 substits. chosen from NO2, CN, halo, 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy, alkylthio or alkylsulphinyl with >=1 NO2, alkylthio or alkysulphinyl gp.), in the presence of a liq. reaction medium with as catalysts (1) a quat. phosphonium or ammonium salt with >=10C atoms with a solubility of >=1 wt. % in the medium and (2) an unhindered tert. amino nucleophile. The cpds. (1) and (2) are pref. used in an amt. of 0.1-20 moles % based on reactants. A temp. of 0-100 degrees C. is used. Prods. (I) and (II) are obtd. in excellent yields with high purity. and are useful as pesticides.
