<p>the engine has a cylinder which works all the time and two cylinders which work at high loads but the inoperative at part load. the crankshaft is divided by a hydraulically operated coupling into a section driven by the permanently working cylinder and a section driven by the high load cylinders. Each crankshaft section drives a separate camshaft for its cylinders. The hydraulic coupling is activated by a hydraulic unit which receives a signal from a switch operated by the accelerator pedal. It has a second input from a position switch which allows the two sections to be connected only when the cranks are in correct alignment.</p> |
