Programme controlled washing machine with mains water supply and magnetically controlled valves has the programme device provided with control means operative at the end of a complete cycle to open one of the valves for a short duration. Effect is to allow fresh water to fill the sump and prevent the washing agents from entering the sump where they are lost. Less washing agent is used and pollution of environment is reduced.
