A conventional cylinder-and-dial machine adapted to permit the incorporation of woollen-spun yarns into the knitted fabric, having the cylinder latch-needles replaced by similar needles without latches, and the dial angularly displaced with respect to the cylinder, so that a selected proportion of cylinder needles, preferably every fourth needle, rises to its highest position before the dial needles advance. The selected cylinder needles engage a woollen-spun yarn, and then descend to place the yarn over the shanks of the corresponding, partly-extended dial needles. All the dial needles subsequently advance to knit a course of a conventionally-formed base fabric, on the face of which appear long floats of the laid-in woollen yarn. The invention converts a conventional machine into a multi-function machine, capable of handling softer yarns than previously possible.
|
