The drum-type machine has a large number of driving parallel spindles in a frame and preferably sloping slightly upwards towards the forward end. At each forward end is a cup-shaped drum mounting and a drive wheel, all spindles in a row having a common endless drive belt reeved over them. The belt is reeved along all of the rows, so as to drive the spindles in each, and can be passed round the wheels of adjacent spindles in opposite directions.
