The mechanism to adjust the relative angular position between the backrest and the seat of a motor vehicle, includes an actuating shaft. This operates a locking element which works together with a row of ball bearings inserted into openings of a plate. The ball bearings project from the plate to make contact with the locking element and are also in contact with conical recesses on the opposite side. The number of recesses is less by at least one than the number of ball bearings. The ball bearings (12) penetrate into the recesses (15) to a variable degree by axial movement and by rotation between the plate (10) and the surface (13) which is coupled with the sections to be adjusted.
