1. Apparatus for clamping sheets (10) of various lengths onto a rotating drum (14) of the type including : first clamping means (18) mounted on said drum and rotatable therewith for clamping the leading edge of a given sheet onto said drum, and second clamping means (50) which can be set either in an active position or in a rest position, and adjusted with respect of said first means in accordance with the lenght of the sheets, for clamping the trailing edge of said sheet onto said drum when said sheet has been completely wound up around said drum, characterized in that it includes : sensing means (41) for detecting that said sheet is completely wound up around said drum and generating a sense signal in response thereto, clutch means for coupling or uncoupling, as required, said second clamping means for rotation with said drum, and control means (31) connected to said sensing means, responsive to said sense signal for setting said second clamping means and said clutch means in the active position to couple said second clamping means for rotation with said drum.
