A 4-(alkoxy-phenyl)-2-pyrrolidone of the general formula I wherein R1 and R2 each are hydrocarbon of up to 18 carbon atoms with at least one being other than methyl, a saturated heterocyclic ring with 5 ring members and a single O or S atom as the hetero atom, or alkyl of 1-5 carbon atoms substituted by one or more halogen atoms or by one of hydroxy, carboxy, alkoxy of 1-5 carbon atoms, alkoxycarbonyl of 1-5 carbon atoms in the alkoxy group, amino, alkylamino of dialkylamino wherein alkyl in each instance is of 1-5 carbon atoms, and X is an oxygen atom or a sulfur atom. The compounds generally exhibit central-depressive, apomorphine-antagonistic and anti-nociceptive action.
