A fire-resistant coating contains a polyester or epoxy binder, melamine, pentaerythritol, ammonium phosphate, dexrin or starch, and an orthosilicic acid colloidal gel. The binder is pref. based on orthophthalic acid, isophthalic acid, bisphenol, vinyl ester, terephthalic acid or epoxy-polyester. The coating can be reinforced with a fibre, layer, each layer having a specific wt. of 10-900 g/m2. The fibres can be oriented or unoriented glass (E or C), mineral, asbestos or thermoplastic fibres subjected to a surface treatment. The coating is made by first homogenising a mixt. of 100 pts. wt. binder, 5-30 melamine, 5-30 pentaerythritol, 8-35 ammonium phosphate, 3-25 dextrin or starch, and, at most, 5 colloidal gel. The immediately before application appropriate initiators are added, and the compsn. applied to a surface in one or several layers, each layer being applied only after polymerisation of the preceding one. The compsn. can be used to coat reinforced plastics, wood, cellular materials, and other inflammable materials. When heated to above 100-120 degrees C the roduct undergoes a modification, the, at 150-180 degrees C, is transformed into into a foam 8-10 mm thick.
|
