A novel brain cell protective containing a morphinane derivative represented by the compound of formula (1) or a pharmacologically acceptable acid-addition salt thereof as the active ingredient. This compound exhibits an excellent protective effect against cranial nerve cell necrosis in both in vitro and in vivo pharmacological tests, and hence can be used for preventing or treating ischemic encephalopathy, cranial nerve cell disorder, and dementia. <CHEM>
