The remote control unit provides different operating modes when used in conjunction with e.g. a TV receiver. The controller can take the form of a compact box in which the top and sides provide clearly-defined differing operating surfaces (3, 4, 5), each being fitted with the necessary controls (6, 7). Alternatively, the control unit may be a desk-type unit with two back-to-back sloping panels or with one top, horizontal panel and one front sloping panel. Each panel is assigned to the appropriate set of control functions, such as TV screen adjustments or Teletext data call-up etc.
