Gripper head for insertion of weft yarns in looms has the clamping position associated with a spring biased means for transforming it into an eyelet. Pref. the gripper head is provided with an open ended slot provided intermediate its length with a clamping position in the form of a raised portion, opposite which is arranged a ball which is biased into co-operation with the portion by a helical spring. Spring may have the required resilience for permitting easy entrance and exit to the weft yarn used. Yarn breakage is prevented in that weft yarn is readily insertable and removable into and from the eyelet.
