The system controls the supply of ink to an ink jet printer dependent on the operating condition and typing speed, having a pump between the ink reservoir and the printing mechanism. In operation the pump runs continuously, but only delivers ink to the mechanism when this is in the printing position. When in the rest position the ink is returned to the reservoir, typically through a multi-way valve connected to a return pipe, and situated between pump and mechanism. There can also be an exhauster, connected via a solenoid valve to the mechanism and operating when the latter is in the rest position.
