A star wheel shaft (1) of the device has one clutch half (22) which can be disengaged and is intended to engage in a clutch half (21) which is connected to the pinion shaft (7) of a motor (6). A spring drum (17) has a toothed rim (23) for engaging with a pinion (16) on the pinion shaft (7). The spring drum (17) is supported such that it can rotate and is used for holding a spiral spring (26) having an inner end (27) and an outer end (28). A cylindrical guide (31), which passes through the rear wall of the spring drum (17), is screwed to a circular-cylindrical sleeve (34) having a flange (35). In a predetermined limit position, the flange (35) touches a sensor (40) of a signal transmitter (38) of the motor (6). The spiral spring (26) is stressed when the motor (6) is switched on. The belt loop therefore does not need to be strictly matched to the tension capability of the belt-feed drive. <IMAGE>
