The process permits the automatic feeding and retracting of the jaw (7) of a rest (6) of an external cylindrical grinding machine. The machine is equipped with a measuring head (5) for measuring the actual size of the machined workpiece diameter. The signal emitted by this measuring head (5) is used in order to activate the stepping motor (8), provided to adjust the rest (6), without using an additional position sensor in the rest. <IMAGE>
