In the case of a record player, in order on the one hand to simplify the technically complicated devices to compensate for the centripetal forces occurring at the sound pick-up and to compensate by mass balance for the bearing pressure of the sound pick-up on the phonographic record (6) and in order on the other hand to provide a record player which can be accommodated in a space-saving way even in relatively flat pieces of furniture, such as for example room dividers, the record player is arranged with the record support in a vertical position. In a sound pick-up carrier (7), bar magnets (12) are provided on both longitudinal sides thereof and on the sound pick-up (8) guide magnets are provided. The magnets (12, 17) form a magnetic field, in which the sound pick-up (8) is mounted freely movably on a suspension (9) connected to a damping element (11). For changing the record, the sound pick-up carrier (7) with the sound pick-up (8) arranged on it is provided in a hinged manner on the housing (13) of the record player. <IMAGE>
