<p>Composite ring seal comprises a corrugated metal ring coated on both sides with a sealant which is compressed and forced into the "valleys" of the corrugations under the action of sealing forces. The coatings are flat, annular discs (of washer-type) when in non-deformed condition, whose thickness is chosen so that corrugation "valleys" are filled out under compression and the discs themselves are cut through by the "crests" of the corrugations when compressive forces are applied. To facilitate this, the corrugated metal ring is provided with some corrugations having cutting crests. The ring discs are made of incompressible material which is, however, adapted to be cut (as indicated above), suitable PTFE, graphite, Al, Pb, Au, Ag. The metal ring is made of (superior alloy) steel.</p> |
