<p>1383576 Uranium salts of sulphuric acid PECHINEY UGINE KUHLMANN 27 Sept 1972 [28 Sept 1971] 44627/72 Heading C1A Uranium salts of sulphuric acid are produced by attacking an ore or uranium bearing concentrate with an aqueous solution of sulphuric acid, separating the undissolved residue from the solution L 1 resulting from the attack, bringing the weight ratio of water/free acid (E/A) of L 1 to a value of from 0À16 to 0À26 and removing the precipitate S2 formed, thereby removing most of the impurities diluting the remaining liquid phase L2 until the value of E/A thereof is from 0À35 to 0À5 and recovering and washing the resulting precipitate S3. Organic material may be removed from the ore concentrate by oxidizing roasting at 300‹ to 500‹ C., calcium, iron and silica may be removed from the ore concentrate by the use of solution L 1 of E/A 0À5- 1À6 and the precipitate S2 may be separated from the heated solution L1 by cooling and the addition of crystalline starters, similarly the precipitate S3 (uranyl sulphate) may be separated from L 2 by cooling the liquid to 30‹ C. and adding crystalline starters. The solid remaining after the acid attack may be washed with water and the resulting liquid recirculated to the acid attack stage along with the liquid remaining after the separation of the precipitate S3. The resulting uranyl sulphate may be rinsed with a solution of the same E/A as L 3 and may be calcined at 900‹ C. to produce U 3 O 8 .</p> |
