6-deoxytetracycline and its derivs., useful as antibiotic, were prepd. by contacting H2 with reaction mixt. composed of tetracycline or its acid-added salts (I; R = H or hydroxy; X = halogen; R1 and R2 =individually phenyl, halogen, lower alkoxy, dimethyl amino, and/or lower alkyl substituted phenyl; R3 = R1, H, or lower alkyl) and noble metals (preferably Rh)as catalyst on the condition of 0-60OC, 14.7-2000P.S.I. until the completion of lla-dehalogenation.
