The metal framework for a piece of furniture, such as filing cabinet or bookcase, has four corner uprights (1) and panels. The corner uprights have arcuate cross-sections with two flat sides, each of which has a lengthwise dove-tailed groove in. The uprights are joined in pairs along three planes by at least one top (5) and one bottom (6) crosspiece. The top (5) and bottom (6) crosspiece are joined by a lengthwise girders (11) each of which has a square cross-section and a lengthwise groove in one of the surfaces. The uprights crosspieces and lengthwise girders, together with screws, bolts and brackets, fix the panels and fitments.
