A coordinate detection device determines data during the writing of a signature. These data are used for calculating the times 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 specified in the figure. Types and duration of the segments produced (see table) are compared with previously stored reference values. The signature is found to be authentic when a predetermined number of segments is within a predetermined time tolerance. This automatic check is faster and safer than test methods which are only based on a comparison of mere shapes. <IMAGE>
