402,774. Compound glass. BONNIKSEN, C. W., and PROTECTOGLASS, Ltd., Farnham Road, Slough. June 4, 1932, No. 15842. [Class 140.] In making compound glass of the kind described in Specification 387,721 from glass sheets coated with celluloid &c., the sheets are arranged with the coated faces slightly separated on a cradle 16, lowered thereon into a bath 11 of a high boiling-point softener, and pressed together while immersed between a hinged pressing-member 42 and the cradle. The cradle consists of a number of grids 16 joined by a bar 18 connected to a rod 20 depending from a pneumatic cylinder, vertical movement of the grids 16 between grids secured to the backing 12 of the tank 11 being facilitated by grooved wheels 17. The pressing- member consists of a number of grids hinged at 41 and united together by a bar 44 which is connected to the rams 46 of pneumatic cylinders. The grids 16 are provided with glass supporting brackets 22 some of which can be retracted into slots in the grids. The glass-engaging surfaces of the fixed and sliding grids and the pressing members are provided with spring-mounted studs 34, 43. The operation of the pneumatic cylinders may be so controlled that after placing the sheets in the cradle and setting a lever, the sequence of operations proceeds automatically, the cradle remaining submerged for a predetermined interval, and being finally raised for the removal of the compound glass. The Provisional Specification describes also means for effecting registration of the glass sheets after immersion, and an auxiliary pressing member which comes into action before the main pressing member. |
