The demountable collar is used to connect two pipes (45, 46) with tapered radial end flanges (43, 44). It can be subdivided into flange retainers (49) and straps (61), the former having longitudinal grooves (50) which house sectors of the two adjacent flanges. The abutting faces of the flanges are parallel and radial, the remote faces (53, 54) being tapered to present a combined symmetrical truncated triangular section and the grooves, thus, having revolutionary conical walls (51, 52) and a variable depth. In addn. the groove invert (50) may be formed by a cylinder of which the dia. nominally exceeds the max flange dia., and groove depth may reduce by 10 to 80% at each end.
