Etching compsn. for coating metal objects prior to welding them together by brazing with flux comprises an inorganic salt which dissolves metal oxides (e.g. a metal halide or an O2-contg. B cpd.), a liq. solvent having a b. pt. =100 degrees C and an organic binder which decomposes at 150-540 degrees C to generate volatile prods. Compsn. dries rapidly after application to form a homogeneous flux layer which adheres strongly, thus improving manual and esp. automated brazing operations.
